2008-2009 Girls Varsity Game Recaps
ANHS Wolverines (3) vs. Ayala Bulldogs (0) 11/25/08
The Lady
Wolverines opened their preseason schedule with a scrimmage
against 4th ranked Division II Ayala
High School.
Aliso took the field with an energetic and aggressive
offense. Seniors Alyssa Newcomer, Kira Cramer
and Junior Dani Wisniewski bombarded Ayala’s
defense and in the 4th minute Newcomer scored with an
assist by
Wisniewski.
Three minutes
later, on an always strong
corner kick
by Senior Haley Horton, Newcomber found the net again, putting
Aliso ahead 2-0.
Entering the game
in the 21st minute were Sophomore Brenna Isbell and
Freshman Forward, Lauren Benner, making her varsity debut.
Aliso continued their attack with speed and consistent
shots on goal. A veteran defensive core with
Seniors Megan Sherman, Nadia Zadeh, Lauren Evans, and Haley
Horton denied any goals to the visiting Bulldogs.
Senior Goalkeeper,
Missy Rhoades, didn’t see much action as Ayala was limited to
only two shots the entire game. Holding the
midfield and setting up opportunities were returners: Charlotte
Wisniewski, Mollie Curran, and Danika Ziemer.
Their experience and skill will be counted on during the
upcoming season. In the 29th minute,
Sophomore Maddy Beckley and Senior Sarah Jones entered the game,
contributing nice runs and solid offense. Juniors
Tyler Hernandez and Katrina Molfetta came into the game to
finish off a strong first half.
Freshman Emily Elkins started the 2nd half, as did Junior Defender Halston Farrell. Aliso’s versatile roster brought in Seniors Nadia Zuabi, Sam Footlik, and Erin Fitz, and continued to provide an impressive offensive and defensive presence. GREAT START ALISO!

ANHS Wolverines (2) vs. La Mirada Matadors (1) 12/3/08
Wednesday's
matchup with home team, La Mirada, began with a quick goal in
the second minute scored by Matador Christine Fallis, leaving
the Wolverines facing an uphill climb. Five minutes later
during a chaotic crush of players in front of the goal, Aliso
had some unexpected assistance by the
Matadors,
resulting with a
Wolverine goal credited to Lauren "Benny" Benner.
With the game now tied at 1-1, Forward Brenna "Izzy" Isbell took the ball up field, breaking through a determined Matador defense, to go one-on-one with goalie Natalie Muela. "Izzy" sent the ball flying into the right corner net, putting Aliso on top 2-1.
Two nice saves by Kathleen Messinger, one in the first and the other in the second half, were key in holding La Mirada to only one goal on the night.
The second half came and went with no goals scored by either team, resulting in a 2-1 win for the visiting Wolverines. Although this game was not the strongest of Aliso's showings, the will to find a way persevered tonight.
